What Is RSI? The Relative Strength Index for Crypto Traders

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is one of the first indicators most traders add to a chart, and one of the most misread. It is a momentum gauge built to answer a simple question: is price rising or falling faster than it usually does? On a slow, liquid market that question has a useful answer. On a low-cap Solana memecoin that doubled in an hour, the same number can point you the wrong way. This guide covers what RSI actually measures, how the overbought and oversold lines are meant to be read, why divergence deserves more of your attention than the raw value, and why you should treat RSI as one weak input on memecoins rather than a trade trigger.

What is the Relative Strength Index?

RSI is a momentum oscillator. That means it takes recent price action and compresses it into a single number that swings, or oscillates, between 0 and 100. It was created by J. Welles Wilder in the late 1970s and has stayed popular for one reason: it turns "this thing has been going up a lot lately" into something measurable.

The word strength here is a little misleading. RSI does not measure how strong a coin is as a project, or compare one token against another. It measures the internal strength of a single price series against its own recent behavior. A high RSI means the market has been posting more gains than losses over the lookback window. A low RSI means losses have dominated. Because the output is bounded between 0 and 100, you can eyeball it quickly and compare readings across very different assets.

The standard setting is a 14-period lookback. On a daily chart that is roughly two weeks of candles; on a 5-minute memecoin chart it is the last 70 minutes. The timeframe you are looking at completely changes what "14 periods" means, which is the first thing people forget.

How RSI is calculated, in plain terms

You never need to compute RSI by hand. Every charting tool does it for you. But a rough intuition helps you avoid trusting it blindly.

Over the lookback window, the indicator separates candles into up moves and down moves, then takes the average gain and the average loss. It forms a ratio called relative strength: RS = average gain / average loss. That ratio is then squeezed into the 0 to 100 range with the formula RSI = 100 - 100 / (1 + RS).

The takeaway from that math is simple. A long string of green candles with few or shallow red ones pushes RSI toward 100. A run of red candles drags it toward 0. When gains and losses are roughly balanced, RSI hovers near the middle, around 50. The 50 line itself is a useful, underrated marker: staying above it suggests buyers have the upper hand, while repeated failures below it suggest sellers do.

One more thing the formula hides: a shorter lookback like 7 makes RSI far twitchier and produces many more extreme readings, while a longer one like 21 smooths it out and produces fewer signals. There is no single correct setting. Shorter is more sensitive and noisier; longer is calmer and slower.

Overbought and oversold: what they really mean

The two lines everyone talks about are 70 and 30. When RSI climbs above 70 the market is called overbought. When it drops below 30 it is called oversold. This is where most of the damage gets done, because those words sound like instructions and they are not.

Overbought does not mean "sell now." Oversold does not mean "buy now." All they tell you is that momentum has stretched unusually far in one direction over the lookback window. Price can absolutely reverse from an extreme reading, but it can just as easily keep going. In a genuinely strong uptrend, RSI can sit above 70 for a long time while price keeps climbing, and shorting every overbought print is a fast way to get run over.

The more honest way to read the lines is as a caution flag, not a trigger. An overbought reading is telling you the easy, obvious part of the move may already be behind you and that risk is rising, not that the top is in. Some traders widen the bands to 80 and 20 on volatile assets precisely because 70 and 30 get tagged so often that they stop meaning much. What actually matters is context: an overbought reading into a known resistance level is worth far more than an overbought reading in the middle of open space.

RSI divergence: the higher-value signal

If there is one RSI concept worth internalizing, it is divergence. Divergence is a disagreement between price and the indicator, and it often carries more information than the raw overbought or oversold value.

Bearish divergence happens when price prints a higher high but RSI prints a lower high. Price is still making new peaks, but momentum behind each peak is fading. It is an early hint that the trend is running out of fuel, even though the chart still looks strong. Bullish divergence is the mirror image: price makes a lower low while RSI makes a higher low, suggesting selling pressure is weakening even as price sets fresh lows.

Divergence is more valuable than a bare reading because it is about the relationship between two things rather than a single arbitrary threshold. It describes momentum losing its grip, which is genuinely useful information. That said, it is still not a timing tool on its own. Divergence can persist for a long time before price actually turns, and in a violent trend it can simply resolve by price catching back up to momentum. Treat it as a reason to pay closer attention and tighten your risk, not as a standalone entry.

How traders actually use RSI

Traders who get value out of RSI almost never use it in isolation. They use it for confluence, meaning they only care about an RSI signal when something else agrees with it. The indicator becomes a supporting witness, not the whole case.

In practice that looks like stacking RSI on top of levels and structure you already trust. An oversold RSI reading that lands right on a support level is a very different situation from an oversold reading in mid-air. An overbought reading that coincides with a rejection candle you can spot from reading candlestick charts is worth more than the number alone. Many traders also check RSI against a moving average for trend direction, or read it alongside MACD, another momentum tool, to see whether two independent measures tell the same story.

The other habit that separates careful users from the rest is respecting the trend. In a strong uptrend, they treat oversold dips toward 40 to 50 as potential continuation entries rather than shorting overbought prints. In a downtrend, they do the opposite. RSI behaves differently depending on the regime, and pretending 70 and 30 mean the same thing in every market is where a lot of losses come from.

Why RSI breaks on Solana memecoins

Here is the part most indicator tutorials skip. Everything above assumes a market with enough depth and history for momentum to mean something. Low-liquidity, fast-moving Solana memecoins often break that assumption, and RSI can become actively misleading.

The problems stack up quickly. A token that launched hours ago barely has enough candles to fill a 14-period window, so the reading is built on almost no data. Moves are frequently vertical rather than gradual, which pins RSI at an extreme and holds it there. A memecoin ripping on a fresh narrative can stay overbought above 70 for the entire run while it keeps doubling, punishing anyone who shorts the "obvious" top. The reverse is worse: a token bleeding out toward zero can read oversold below 30 the whole way down, tempting bag-holders to average into something that never recovers. RSI has no idea whether the down move is a healthy dip or liquidity being pulled.

That last point is the one that matters most. RSI cannot see a rug, a freeze authority, a thin liquidity pool, or a handful of wallets holding the supply. It only sees price. On memecoins, the questions that actually keep you safe are structural, not momentum-based: how deep is the liquidity, how is the holder distribution spread, is the pool locked, and who can move the float. Those you check with an explorer, not an oscillator. There is a psychological trap baked in here too.
